SMOKEYS JAGUAR AQHA/NFQHA 1998 Palomino Stallion Smokey’s Jaguar, a.k.a. Jag, is by Smokeys Gray and out of Miss Jeanie Jaguar. Jag is 82% foundation because his maternal grandsire is Mr. Jaguar, a Castus Rastus(TB) & double Three Bars(TB) bred stallion. Personally I like a little Three Bars in the breeding. Jag’s Sire is 93% and his maternal granddam would have been 100%.
My husband and I traveled out of state to find a replacement for our old roan stallion: we knew what we were looking for. I wanted something that would qualify for NFQHA (80% or higher Quarter Horse blood) and I wanted an own son of an AQHA Champion. Rob wanted height and athletic ability (a roping type horse) but he placed a price limit on the purchase. I researched the Internet, horse journals, and newspapers for six months. What seemed to hinder us the most were my foundation % and his price range. I did finally locate a few ranches and horse breeders that we could go visit. The very last place we stopped (Sager, Texas) we found Jag. He fit my bill and he fit Rob’s criteria and he had that popular palomino color. He was also so beautiful with his great conformation that we decided to gamble and buy a weanling colt. The gamble paid off as we now have a beautiful stallion with a wonderful disposition. Jag is very talented; he has successfully performed in 4 different events (halter, roping, reining & in-hand trail). We have plans to continue riding him and we’re currently planning to show him in ranch versatility, team sorting & performance halter classes. We also ride him on the ranch gathering and sorting cattle.
Jag’s sire “Smokey” is an AQHA Champion with a Superior in Halter & Western Pleasure (he was only 5 points away from a Heeling Superior). He also has points in Heading, Calf Roping, Reining, and Working Cow. Smokey’s sire is Smokey Duster Too (AQHA Chp.) who has the bloodlines of Star Duster, Scooter W, Poco Bueno, and Joe Hancock. Smokey’s dam Texie B McKee (AQHA & ROM producer) has the bloodlines of Mike McKee, Chubby, Chicaro Bill, Domino, and Red Dog. When my husband and I went to Texas we got to see Smokey in person. He was so huge and magnificent! Standing 16 hands and weighing at least 1300 lbs., he pranced around like he was king (even at the old age of twenty). There were winning pictures of him and his get all over the show room.
Jag’s dam “Jeanie” was never shown. Jeanie does have a full sister who earned her performance ROM, and a full brother who showed successfully in halter, winning 4th place yearling geldings at World. Jeanie is a great producer, producing foals who have won 10 performance ROMs, 2 World show Hi-Point placers, 1 Superior heeling horse and 1 Reserve World Champion (another foal is 3 pts away from a Sup. Western Pleasure award). At twenty years of age this brown mare looked more refined that I would have thought for having a halter champion sire & a foundation-bred dam. She certainly showed the race bloodlines. Jeanie is by AQHA Champion Mr. Jaguar, who has the racing bloodlines of Castus Rastus, Mame Taylor, Three Bars, and Chicaro Bill. Her dam is Jerry Shanie (ROM producer), who has Chief P-3, Red Dexter, and Dan (by Old Joe Bailey) on her papers. Mr Jaguar mares crossed so well with Smokeys Gray that they became quite popular and 18 full & 7/8 siblings to Jag have shown in AQHA or PHBA. These 18 siblings have earned almost $46,500 in AQHA funds alone!
